Tom was transformed into the Spider-Man character in Joe Russo and Anthony Russo's smash Marvel film Captain America: Civil War. Since then, he's had many appearances, and two standalone films as the web-slinging superhero of the studios. According to GQ, the Russo brothers are steadfast regarding getting Tom Holland to the MCU as well as the subsequent Spider-Man films. "We spoke to [President Kevin] Feige at Marvel about Holland and he became excited and we visited Sony ..." to discuss it," said Joe Russo. "And they said"Let's consider this for a moment. We could tell that we were facing opposition from Sony. Then we brought [Holland] back to bring him back, returned him and determined to keep at it in the pursuit of forcing him into to the throats of the company who owns this IP. The end result was an argument, but Sony continued to drag the issue."


"Look We have a strong connection with Kevin. Winter Soldier was a big success, with a double of the amount of money that was made from the previous film. Then, entering Civil War Sony is looking at us and saying "OK, you possess an Midas touch, let's give you our Spider-Man IP. Also they were cautious in the idea of releasing something that could cost hundreds of millions and billions of dollars down time," Joe Russo added.


This wasn't the only problem. There was a lot of doubt regarding casting an actor of Tom Holland's age in that time. "It is the first occasion that that Spider-Man never been cast in the role of a teenager, isn't it? That was crucial for us. There was a sense of anxiety casting a child," Anthony Russo said.


"There's an alternate universe in which Tom Holland is the last famous movie star to emerge between the wires of disruption. It requires the perfect storm of circumstances to make an iconic star: talent, timing, market," Joe Russo said.
